Class Information

2015  YEAR 5/6 CLASS INFORMATION
Welcome to Room 18 - Mrs. Ali Warnock and Mr. Mark Hansen (on Fridays)

We are looking forward to the year ahead and the opportunity of working with your children. The students in Room 18 are fortunate in being able to work with both the Yr 6/7 Core Classes and the students and teachers in Rooms 9/10. We can make the most of all opportunities available to us.
In our first  two weeks together as a class have been busy setting up our routines, expectations and responsibilities. We believe it is important for all students to feel valued, challenged and encouraged to achieve their personal best. Individual differences are acknowledged and celebrated and help us all to see matters from all different points of view. Showing consideration and by caring for each other and ourselves, students are expected to consider the rights of others to learn and the teachers right to teach. This results in a positive learning environment where everyone feels safe and respected. Opportunities to demonstrate leadership and collaborative skills are provided frequently.

Feedback is given at every opportunity so that students are able to reflect on their learning and begin to set personal goals for improving their own educational outcomes. We are keen to engage students in discussion about “learning how to learn.” and how to apply that to everyday tasks.
GENERAL INFORMATION
MORNINGS
Duty of care begins at 8.35a.m. Before this time children need to be in the direct care of a parent or in OSHC. Students in Room 18 are able to participate in the EAST program beginning at 8.15 in Rooms 6 and 8. Students must sign in when attending. On most morning students in our class may come in at 8.35 to organise themselves for the day ahead by setting out necessary stationery on desks and catching up with outstanding work. Students who come to school after the 8.50 bell are asked to sign in at the office first.
CANTEEN
Lunch and recess orders are available every day except Monday.  Bags are available for purchase from the canteen.
2015 TEACHERS
Specialist teachers contributing to your child’s learning include:
Mrs Liz Gehling - Science
Mr Lester Halliday – Physical Education (on Friday)
Mrs Jenni Krasnoff – Japanese
Mrs Jane Moore - Librarian
Mrs Jill Woolley – Pottery (5 weeks - beginning in Week 4 on Tuesdays)
BANKING
The Commonwealth Bank provide a student banking service each Thursday.
LIBRARY BORROWING
All children are encouraged to borrow from our Resource Centre before or after school as well as during our scheduled Library time on Mondays each week. Students are given guidance in selecting suitable books. As part of our English Programme, all students are expected to complete the Premier's Reading Challenge and the 40 Book Challenge. It’s our goal for the entire class to complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge by the end of this term. One student has already completed this because books read during the holidays count towards the total read.
HATS
Hats are necessary for outdoor activities during Terms 1 and 4. Our school has a ‘no hat, no play’ policy. Children without hats are required to sit in a shaded area for outdoor activities including play at recess and lunch times.
MORNING SNACK
We promote healthy eating.  Students may have a healthy snack each day at around 10.00am. Appropriate classroom snacks are cheese, carrot sticks, celery, dried fruit, apples, bananas, grapes and strawberries. Please be mindful to ensure nuts and nut products are not sent to school. APS is a ‘Nut Aware’ school.
HOMEWORK
It’s important for children to develop a routine to complete any homework or unfinished work. Our homework focus is reading regularly, learning spelling words and times tables. At times, other work may be set or require finishing.
OTHER COMMUNICATIONS
APS Newsletters are now online. In Room 18, students are given time to record and use diaries for all important information. Parents and caregivers are also asked to use the diary to communicate student information such as illness or general information. It’s important for diaries to be signed each weekend. We check diaries regularly.
PIGEON HOLES
Each student has a ‘pigeonhole’ where notes and notices are placed. It is expected that the children check their pigeon holes regularly, especially the beginning and end of each day. An IN tray is located on the teacher table of the return of notes. Money must be handed in at the office and needs to be placed in envelopes with correct details on the front.
ATTENDANCE
It’s important for students to be punctual and attend school regularly unless due to illness or family reasons. Students should not be absent from school on their birthday. Adults attend their workplace on their birthdays and likewise so should children. They also miss the fun of sharing their special day with their classmates.
We are legally required to code absences and it would be appreciated if you could provide this information when advising us of an absence. This may be through your child’s diary, phoning the front office or leaving a message on the school phone for this purpose: 0447467152.
BLOG
We will be using this blog frequently throughout this year and all notes and notices for the class will be available via it. Homework will also be posted here so you know what is expected of you child. This blog can be accessed through the school website but we recommend you bookmarking a direct link on your browser or smartphone. Our school uses Ardtornish Community (Ardtornish+) for correspondence. This is not only an important platform for whole school information but also a means for us to directly correspond with all active parents.  We hope all parents can become a part of this. A step by step tutorial can be accessed at

Our IT teacher, Steve Whitehead, is available every morning before school to assist you to set up your phone or tablet to get messages delivered to you through Google Plus ( Google + )
